With reference to your No.315 of the 2nd. instant,

I have the honour to enclose translation of a despatch

from His Excellency the Viceroy, containing Taotʼzi Lin

Ho Tung's explanation of his conduct in leaving Hongkong

without attending the final interview which had been pre-

viously arranged for between the British and Chinese

Officials.
